well the ring broke the illusion, he didn't actually do anything to break the illusion. if he didn't have that god ring, he would of been stuck just like her. if she had the ring and she took the pill sooner, she would of saved him.
it's not a matter of who saved who but who had a ring to dispel the illusion. this is made clear by him looking at the ring while she is questioning her own strength
